Meet Our Eye Doctors

Dr. Brian J. McKee, M.D., M.S.

Dr. McKee has been practicing in Newport News, VA, since 1987. He was raised in upstate New York in a family of five physicians, including two sisters and one brother-in-law, who are ophthalmologists.

He obtained his undergraduate degree from Lafayette College and his Master's Degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. After attending Albany Medical College in New York, he interned at West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh and completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of Kentucky Medical Center.

Dr. McKee is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgery, the Virginia Society of Ophthalmology, the Newport News Medical Society, and the American Diabetes Association. He practices comprehensive ophthalmology, emphasizing cataract surgery, diabetic eye disease, glaucoma treatment, and medical-surgical laser treatments.

Dr. McKee is interested in fitness and nutrition and enjoys playing many sports, including tennis, soccer, skiing, hockey, and rowing. He has lived on the Virginia peninsula for over 20 years and has one daughter and two sons.

Dr. Hugh E. Berckmueller, M.D

Dr. Berckmueller has been practicing in Newport News, VA, since 2000. He grew up in Northern Ohio, where his father practiced ophthalmology.

Dr. Berckmueller attended the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He and his wife have five beautiful children.

Dr. Berckmueller is affiliated with the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Newport News Medical Society.

He also works with local hospitals to instruct medical residents. He specializes in cataract surgery, diabetic eye care, glaucoma management, and other eye diseases.

Dr. Debra Bashkoff, O.D.

Dr. Bashkoff has been practicing on the peninsula since 1993. She is a native of New York and graduated from the New York College of Optometry.

Dr. Bashkoff is married to a local surgeon, and they have two daughters.

Dr. Bashkoff specializes in routine eye exams, contact lens fittings, specialty lenses, and thorough refractions for eyeglass prescriptions. She also provides surgical follow-up care and treats many eye health issues.
